Employers often exercise their rights to administer random drug testing as a way to determine whether or not an employee is a drug user; drug use in the workplace is often blamed for absenteeism, health problems and on-the-job accidents. Although many companies already require pre-employment drug screenings, many claim that random drug testing is more effective at finding the drug users in their workforce. With a pre-employment drug screening, the employee often has at least a few hours of advance warning and therefore can attempt to take measures to ‘cheat’ on the test. ‘How long does marijuana stay in your system?’ This question is asked by many different people, and for good reason. Marijuana (pot, herb, weed, grass) is the most commonly used and tested for drug in the United States and several other countries as well. Marijuana’s effects on the user and detection time depend on its strength or potency, which is related to the amount of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) it contains.

When you ask the question ‘ How long does marijuana stay in your system? ‘ you need to take into account the fact that there is no simple answer to this question. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) can stay in a person’s body for as long as 3 to 90 days after smoking or being ingested orally. It stores in the fat cells of the body, the brain, the liver, and the kidneys, in other words the major organs.

Instead of spending your time trying to calculate how long marijuana will stay in your system, simply find out what kind of drug test you will be taking, and then purchase the product which is most effective and appropriate for the particular drug test you will be undergoing. Drug tests do give us concrete knowledge, they may act as a deterrent to use and they will allow parents to take action quickly in the event of a positive test result. However, the issues surrounding their use are not quite as clear cut as those selling the test kits would have us believe and there are some risks associated with drug testing your teen. You need to get educated to the risks and benefits, and make an individual and informed decision about what’s best for your family, and for your teen.

If your child does have a history of drug use or substance abuse problems, then the arguments towards testing get a lot more compelling, and if your child has a history of lying to you about their substance use, then you may not need to worry much about eroding your trust relationship.

If you do decide that you need to test your child, make sure you have a reasoned talk with them explaining why you’re are doing it, and explaining that you are only testing them because you love and worry for them. Parenting teens is a tough job, and there are rarely easy answers.
